WONDERFUL PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT

Fairfield Township continues to work alongside the Butler County Engineer's Office to improve infrastructure and safety year after year. 2024 is no exception.  The Township is blessed with an incredibly talented and hard working Public Works Department. Throughout the year this group repairs and/or replaces catch basins, potholes, curbs, clogged tile, handicap ramps, equipment, playground surface, and an entire host of other items such as inspecting stormwater pipes and mowing acres of grass.

INVALUABLE PARTNERSHIP WITH THE BCEO

Some projects are so large in scope that it is necessary to engage the Butler County Engineer's Office (BCEO).  Typically the BCEO has a greater ability to bid projects, is equipped with larger and necessary equipment, and can provide critical engineering plans and expertise. Here is a sampling of some of the larger projects currently occurring (or about to occur) in Fairfield Township thanks to the critical participation of the BCEO:

PAVING OF PRINCETON ROAD:

Project ScopeAsphalt paving from Jayfield Dr to SR 4 Bypass in Fairfield Twp.

Project Benefits: Resurfacing the road every 17 to 18 years provides longevity.

Traffic Impacts: Performed under traffic with possible delays.

Project Status: Pre-construction

Project Timing: April - November

Contract Cost: $492,944.86 - Barrett Paving Materials, Inc.

MORRIS AND MILLIKIN ROUNDABOUT

Project Scope:

This project involves installing a single-lane roundabout in Fairfield Twp.

Project Benefits:

The purpose of this project is to improve overall safety at the intersection and address future traffic needs. This location has been identified as an area of increasing concern related to both safety and congestion issues.

Traffic Impacts:

Intersection closure with detour.

Project Status:

Pre-construction

Project Timing:

February 2024: bat tree removal and utility work. Roundabout construction begins May 2024, after school is out for summer - August 2, 2024, prior to students returning to school.

Construction Cost Estimate:

$1,474,814 - Rack and Ballauer Excavating Co., Inc.

Construction Funding Partners:

Federal (CEAO), BCEO, BCWS

Project Funding: BCEO

KING AND PATER BLOCK GRANTS FOR SEWER

Initial preliminary plans have been developed by the BCEO based in the Township's CDBG application.  After the Township’s project was approved for funding a county surveyor was assigned to survey the site for the project.  After the survey was complete, a more detailed look at the watershed was done, and after further engineering, the scope of the project grew to more appropriately address the stormwater issues on King.  Some of the larger changes to the project included 1. the need for curb on both sides of the road and 2. the increase in size of the pipe.

If the Board of Trustees decide to move both projects forward, a rough timeline has been provided:

  • The County plans to put the projects out to bid in 2-3 months
  • Construction would be anticipated to start this fall.

New estimates for the increased scope included utility updates, additional surveying, and were also revised to cover any increases in material and labor costs.  At this time the BCEO has final plans and have provided separate cost estimates for construction.
