Citizen Police Academy
The Fairfield Township Police Department is looking for a few good men and women who possess the desire to understand what the police do. The police Department will begin its 8th Citizen Police Academy in January of 2010 and is now accepting applications for the program.
The academy is a ten week program in which citizens learn about different topics involving the Police Department’s functions as well as gaining a working knowledge and background of the department by explaining different aspects of police work using classroom discussions and hands on demonstrations. Participants also get a behind the scenes look at some of the duties and responsibilities of a law enforcement officer and the procedures that are followed.
Academy participants are entitled to a ride-along on patrol after completing five weeks of the academy. Upon graduation, members are eligible for unlimited ride-alongs.
The Academy meets in the Community Room at the Police Department on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 9:30PM.
The police department does not train individuals attending the Citizen Police Academy to be a Police Officer, but educates them with the goal of producing informed citizens.
Some of the topics covered are:
- The Judicial System
- D.A.R.E./G.R.E.A.T
- Gang Awareness
- Criminal Investigations and Evidence Collection
- Crash Investigations and Traffic Enforcement
