Fairfield Township Police History
The Fairfield Township Police Department begain as a part-time operation in the late 1960's. Stan
Brickles was the police chief until Jim Proctor took over that role in 1970. In addition to Jim's part-time status, John Riley and
Charlie Warren also served as part-time officers. All three officers patrolled the Township in their own cars.
The police department
began its full-time operation in 1977 with Donald Yost as the chief. Yost remained the Chief of Police until Harold (Speedy) May assumed
that position in 1983. May served as police chief until 1984 when Michael Kirsch was appointed. Kirsch remained the Chief of Police
for the Township until his retirement in 2000.
On May 1, 2000, Richard St. John was appointed the new Chief of Police for Fairfield
Township. Chief St. John received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice in 1998 and was Chief of Police in Carlisle, Ohio
since August 30, 1999. Prior to his position with the Carlisle police department, Chief St. John was with the City of Fairfield for
over 25 years.
In addition to full-time and part-time officers, we have a part-time Crime Prevention Specialist, Mike Oler and 2 full-time
investigators, Detective Doug Lanier and Detective Michael Kammer. The rest of the police administrative staff includes Chief Richard
St. John, Assistant Chief Alan T. Laney, and our Police Clerk, Tina Coy.
Behind the Scenes
Our Fairfield Township police officers are
dedicated to providing the best possible protection for our residents. In order to provide this protection, training is an ongoing
process.
Did you know our Township Police Department has its own Special Response Team that is a member of the Butler County Regional
SWAT team?
Our members receive their basic SWAT certification through the Hamilton Police Department with instructors from the Los
Angeles SWAT Division. Our officers then train on a bi-weekly basis with the Butler County SWAT team.
The Butler County team has a
total of 24 trained Special Response Officers. All of the equipment and training expenses for this unit are funded by a Federal grant
through
the U.S. Department of Justice.
